AeroPress Brewing Guide
The versatile, travel-friendly brewer with endless recipes
To make AeroPress coffee, add medium-fine grounds, pour hot water, stir, and press slowly after a short steep. The standard method brews filter-side down in about one minute; the inverted method brews upside down for full immersion, then flips onto the mug. Total brew time stays under two minutes.
Why AeroPress
The AeroPress combines immersion and pressure brewing into one compact device. It's forgiving, fast (total brew time under 2 minutes), and incredibly versatile — you can make anything from espresso-style concentrate to clean filtered coffee. It's also the only brewer with its own World Championship.
Standard Method
The original method recommended by the inventor, Alan Adler.
- 01Place a paper filter in the cap, rinse, and attach to the chamber.
- 02Set the AeroPress on your mug (filter-side down).
- 03Add 15g of fine-medium ground coffee.
- 04Pour 200g of water at 185°F (85°C) — slightly cooler than other methods.
- 05Stir 3 times gently. Insert the plunger to seal.
- 06At 1:00, press down slowly (30 seconds of pressing).
Inverted Method
The community-favorite technique that prevents early dripping and allows full immersion.
- 01Insert the plunger into the chamber about 1 inch. Flip upside down (plunger on bottom).
- 02Add 17g of medium-fine grounds.
- 03Pour 220g of water at 200°F (93°C).
- 04Stir gently. Let steep for 1:30.
- 05Attach the filter cap (pre-rinsed). Carefully flip onto your mug.
- 06Press down slowly for 30 seconds.
Best Beans for AeroPress
The AeroPress works well with any roast level. Light roasts yield bright, clean results (especially with the inverted method and higher temperatures). Medium roasts produce balanced, sweet cups. Dark roasts make excellent concentrate that you can dilute with hot water for an Americano-style drink.

Frequently Asked
- What is the inverted AeroPress method?
- You brew with the AeroPress upside down so nothing drips through early, then flip it onto the cup to press. It gives more control over steep time.
- Is AeroPress coffee espresso?
- No — it is a concentrate, not true espresso. It lacks the 9 bars of pressure, but the strong concentrate makes a good base for milk drinks.
- How fine should I grind for AeroPress?
- Medium-fine, around the texture of table salt. Finer grinds suit short steep times; coarser grinds suit longer ones.
