According to Unpacking Coffee, the company is fully independent and woman-owned — a distinction that sets it apart in a segment long dominated by venture-backed brands. Two decades in, Ritual remains one of a small group of roasters that helped define Bay Area specialty coffee before third-wave became a marketing term.

Ritual emerged in the mid-2000s alongside what The Coffee Vine calls San Francisco's "big three" — the cohort of roasters who turned the city into a reference point for American specialty coffee. Where other early players eventually took outside investment or sold to larger platforms, Ritual held its independent status. The company expanded to multiple cafes across San Francisco while maintaining its own roasting operation, positioning itself as a vertically integrated presence from sourcing through bar service.

The roasting program has emphasized seasonal offerings since the beginning, with rotating espresso blends serving as the primary expression of each harvest cycle. Products like the Day Drinker Seasonal Espresso and the Last Exit Blend reflect an approach centered on variability and sourcing specificity rather than year-round consistency. The café and wholesale channels both carry this seasonal emphasis, making the lineup a reasonable indicator of what's available at origin in any given quarter.
