Equator Coffees

Equator Coffees has operated out of San Rafael in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1995, founded by Brooke McDonnell. Over three decades the company has grown from a single roasting operation into one of California's larger independent specialty brands, now running twelve neighborhood cafes across the region and holding B Corp certification — a credential it earned early, before sustainability became a baseline expectation in the industry.

The company came up during the Bay Area's first serious push toward traceable, fairly traded coffee, and its identity has been shaped by that period. Where many roasters of its era have since pivoted toward minimalist branding or hospitality-forward concepts, Equator leaned into the institutional credibility its sourcing programs built — relationships with producers that now span decades rather than harvest cycles.

The current catalog covers a range of origins and processing styles. Recent releases include a Mexico Pluma Oaxaca single-origin espresso, a Thailand Mae Chedi anaerobic natural, and a Honduras Liquidambar Parainema — origins that signal attention to emerging regions alongside more established supply chains. The roaster also produces blends, among them Super Bloom, framed as a seasonal expression of its farm partnerships. Coffees ship nationally in 12oz, 2lb, and 5lb formats, with a subscription option discounting ten percent per bag.
