Square Mile Coffee Roasters was founded in London in 2008 by Anette Moldvaer and James Hoffmann — two figures who had already shaped the vocabulary of UK specialty coffee before launching a roastery of their own. Hoffmann had won the World Barista Championship in 2007; Moldvaer brought sourcing and sensory depth from her background as a Q Grader and coffee buyer. From the outset, Square Mile oriented itself around precision and transparency rather than volume or brand theatrics.

The roastery arrived at a moment when London's specialty scene was still coalescing, and Hoffmann and Moldvaer built it into one of the most closely watched operations in the country. Their wholesale program became a training resource for cafés across the UK, and the company grew without visibly chasing scale for its own sake. Both founders remained active in the wider coffee world — Moldvaer as a writer and sensory specialist, Hoffmann as the author of *The World Atlas of Coffee* and, later, one of the most followed coffee communicators on YouTube.

Square Mile's roasting leans toward the lighter end of the development spectrum, foregrounding origin character over roast-driven flavor. Lot notes accompanying each release routinely include producer names, cultivar, processing method, and elevation — a standard that was less common in 2008 than it is now. The Red Brick blend has served as a long-running espresso anchor, while a rotating single-origin lineup covers both filter and espresso formats. Sourcing relationships tend toward directness or close approximations of it, with buying trips documented in the company's published notes.
